Creative Career Development at Art Start connects youth to specific paid practicum opportunities with our various industry partners.

Our career development includes structured internships, apprenticeships, career exploration travel to creative capital cities, and industry collaboration projects, all taking a direct, hands on approach to creative career development with Art Start's numerous industry partners.

Industry Collaboration Projects

Art Start works with our dedicated industry partners on collaborative projects that span a range of fields involving the creative arts. These projects have included creating a campaign with Shake Shack from ideation to execution and a fashion marketing project with Kurt Geiger, where participants conceptualized the project, took on different collaborative roles - creative director, models, stylist, photographer - and created editorial photos using the brand's products. Creative Career Internships

Creative Career Internships are 10-12 week paid internship programs for teens and young adults to explore careers in the creative arts industries and gain hands-on industry production experience in collaboration with notable arts and media companies.

Interns produce collaborative projects each week of the program, including marketing and branding campaigns, art installations, video production, advertising campaign work, graphic design, and more.

Industry Apprenticeships

Art Start's Creative Industries Apprenticeships are 12-month, full-time, paid apprenticeships in the creative industries, certified by the State of New York Department of Labor. After successful completion of the apprenticeship, participants are offered official employment by the host agency.

2024 Apprenticeship Partner: Phillips

Phillips, a destination for international collectors to buy and sell the world’s most important 20th-century and contemporary works of art, design, jewels, watches, and photographs

Arts Management

Apprentices will work at the Phillips office, warehouse, and gallery in the following functional areas:

Art handling, shipping, and property management

Sale administration, including project management, client interaction, and interdepartmental coordination

Client service, bid assistance, and event support

Saleroom operations, including bid spotting, ushering, registration, etc.

While gaining hands-on work experience in the areas listed above, apprentices will also be coached to define their interests so that experiences can be tailored to their future career goals. Each apprentice will be matched with a Phillips staff who will provide mentorship and networking opportunities, which are helpful in building a successful career in the arts industry. Mentors will include staff members from Phillips specialist departments, back office functions, and operations teams.
